SYNOPSIS OF THE HEARTBREAK AGENCY
Known for suspenseful thrillers, Germany can throw surprises in the rom-com genre too. Honestly, it’s been almost a year since I saw a romantic movie from the country. It is a witty rom-com running for one and a half hours.
“The Heartbreak Agency” is a conventional rom-com that follows a journalist and a heartbreak therapist as they fall in love with each other. This movie is roughly based on a book by Elena-Katharina Sohn, in which she recounts the experiences of heartbroken adults.
A skeptical journalist reluctantly enters heartbreak therapy for an article, but he ends up opening his heart to his charming therapist.
SUMMARY OF THE HEARTBREAK AGENCY
The story follows that after a heartbreak, Maria decided to start an agency that would focus on those suffering from lovesickness. She believed that everyone can’t move on easily from a romantic relationship, so she decided to help those people.
And then she created an agency named “The Heartbreak Agency.” It also helps her to deal with her broken heart by helping other people. She was also Karl’s girlfriend during her sessions.
Karl is a journalist who writes for a magazine. His girlfriend was dissatisfied with their relationship, so they broke up. Karl believes that his girlfriend’s heartbreak counselor (Maria) Karl blames Maria for the breakup and decides to interview her.
Karl does not value Maria’s work, nor does he believe that she can help people. He was frustrated because of his breakup, so he writes a sexist article about her (Maria) in revenge without getting his boss’s approval, so he gets fired.
He lost his job because of that article he wrote; that’s why he has a hard time getting another job. So he decided to request that his former boss rehire him. On one condition, his boss agrees that Karl must attend a
Maria’s heartbreak therapy and write an article about heartbreak with sincerity.
Karl agrees to complete the entire program to avoid getting kicked out by Maria. One day, he gets to talk to Maria, who now knows that Karl has commitment issues. Both do not believe in the idea of big romantic love. Maria’s and Karl’s views on love are very common.
Soon after, a member of the group, Turgay, follows Karl’s advice and leaves to stop his ex-girlfriend, Timea, from marrying her fiancé instead of getting over her. Karl and Maria rush to stop Turgay but end up accidentally starting a fire and ruining the wedding. The two of them are then taken to the police station.
That night, Maria tells Karl about her own heartbreak. Maria found it hard to move on from him. Karl tells Maria that he would not prioritize saving the planet over being with her, and the two of them end up sleeping together.
The next day, Maria panics about sleeping with Karl and decides to leave before the retreat is over. Before she leaves, Maria and Karl assure each other that the night they spent together did not mean anything. Karl can’t stop thinking about Maria. And his roommate found that he had fallen in love with her.
After the retreat, Karl and Maria meet again. They grow closer the more time they spend together. Karl even offers to babysit Hedi. Surprisingly, Karl is good with children. He teaches her how to skateboard and even gives her his board. With his help, Hedi manages to get the attention of the boy she likes. This results in Karl and Hedi bonding.
